RE: NY to Grand Canyon - Do I need the Dingy?

You have to think on how much you will use it. There is plenty of parking for your class C. 21 days is not very much considering the distance you will be traveling. You have to consider 5 days of driving out and 5 days back if you do about 500 miles a day, 10 hours a day driving. Very ambitious trip. If you plan to stay in one location for days at a time then take it. If you're going to do a hit and run, then don't. We've done it both ways and enjoyed them all. Is some places the toad would have been a hinderance.

RE: New type of Solar Panels.

I've been following Nano solar for a while. Great potential and people are dumping money into this company.

RE: What are the advantages of Apple over PC?

Apple dropped from $202.96 to $109.12 the past year because they don't don't build computers that consumers want under $1,000. Microsoft market cap is $241.77 Billion vs $96.67 Billion for Apple. Apple has gone from 6 billion to 96 billion because they don't build junk computers.

RE: What are the advantages of Apple over PC?

As far as the 777 point drop causing Apple to lose 30% of its value in the past few months you are simply deluding yourself. First of all the silly 777 point drop was literally a "drop in the bucket" compared to the real market hit in 1987 of over 20%. To think a silly one day 6% drop in the market made Apple lose 30% of value just shows how impossible it is for anyone to debate you - you simply ignore facts that don't suit you. Apple's a great company but take off your blinders once in a while will you. Sorry Tom, I'm finished here as this thread is way off track and into fantasy land. Cheers, Dave I guess you're not aware of all the manipulation with Apple stocks which is widely known. DId you even look WHY and WHO said WHAT to get it to drop dramatically? Did you look at the record of this "persons" track record on predicting Apple future? I've been following apple stock for a LONG time. DO you think this is the first time apple stock shredded 30% of it's value? No it's not. I bought at that dip and got in at $13.... I guess it was in the toilet then and I should have abandoned it. SInce I did I went on to make a bunch of money. Not bad for a $13 dollar stock. Look at the financials of Apple. 99% of the analysts have it at buy or strong buy. I guess they have their blinders on too.

RE: What are the advantages of Apple over PC?

I guess that would depend upon the price paid, wouldn't it? bumpy Actually no, the ebb and flow of the market is what you are seeing. A stock in the toilet, which I have had some, are worthless. If you said you just bought WaMu I would agree on it being in the toilet.

RE: What are the advantages of Apple over PC?

I call a 30% drop on any stock "in the toilet" - especially for a company that is "increasing market share so dramatically" :R. BTW, Wachovia is $3.45 but it too is in the toilet too but somebody forgot to flush. On Edit - Isn't it amazing how these threads get off-topic (no small thanks to me)!!!??? :C Dave Then of course you'd have to see the reason for the drop. You think a 700 point DOW drop and the outlook from a analyst manipulating the stock had anything to do with it?Then of course there has been over a 3,000 DOW point drop off it's highs and yet it still holding over a hundred dollars a share. Just about ALL stocks are well off their highs. Wachovia is NOW $3.45, $2 and change yesterday,I think it hit a penny on money, but I bought it at .83 on the way up. I made 9 grand last week buying and selling Wachovia. Sold the last of it friday and bought it again this week to a much lower position then last week and sold it again and made more. BTW, if you bought on the Apple dip when it hit $100, which I did, then sold it when it made that $11 a share burst you could have made a bunch. Oh wait I did.. :) :) Apple has been a cash cow for me. MY MS stock has not.

and I truly am happy for them. Me too - now if only my Apple stock would get out of the toilet! :C Dave Apple stock $110 Wachovia this week .83 cents. Microsoft $26.57 You have a funny definition of a stock being in the toilet.

RE: What are the advantages of Apple over PC?

Look at the specs, 2,0GHZ, 1GB RAM,120HD vs 2.5GHZ,3GB RAM and 500GB HD. Maybe you should do the same. I did a side by side comparison , the best that could be done and the Dell was $1364 before rebate. What you fail to do is add the "missing" items that the Mini has that the Dell doesn't. To compare apples to apples you have to upgrade the following items. Upgrade Vista Premier to Ulitimate as OS X is the Ultimate version from Apple. That's a $120 upgrade from Dell. Add in a dual layer drive $30 Bluetooth add $40 Firewire add $40 Photo editing software add $79 Music & sound editing software add $70 Want to edit movies add $79 Want website software add $37 Want back up software add $20 Want wifi? Now there is the question for some reason it doesn't list adding a wifi card. It seems it doesn't have a port for wifi, maybe it does but I couldn't find it. Now wouldn't that be fun, running you ethernet cord out the door of your rv ,down the street to a connection somewhere. Now since this is a Dell desktop that crossing the 1k mark it doesn't make sense to compare it to a beefed up Mac Mini. It would make sense to compare it to a iMac and then the Dell doesn't compare as you can't add many of the missing items. Now wouldn't it be more fun to lug that Dell out to your RV vs the Mac MIni or iMac. Where space is at a premium for Rvers the Apple computers just take up less space.

RE: What are the advantages of Apple over PC?

People who switch to Macs will usually "get it" after using it for awhile. Something a person looking in from the outside doesn't.

RE: new small computers from Dell

I was looking at those myself. The negative that I found is that these small computers do not have a CD drive. An external one is 85 dollars extra. So 399+85= 485 dollars. It is tough for me to spend that much when I can go down to the store and buy a nicely equipped laptop with triple or quadruple the amount of ram, 250 GB HDD vs the 4,8,or 16 GB in the mini, etc. I know the mini has a SSD, but I do not use my computer while I am jogging down the road, so that is a non factor for me. It would make an awesome travel computer though for those with extra cash. Much better and cheaper than a $2000+ Macbook air, and it fills the same need, small and light. Not even in the same category .Are you really in the IT field? It's obvious that the computer makers are trying to fill other people's needs. One size does not fit all.

RE: What are the advantages of Apple over PC?

It's actually $1028 now. But you forgot to mention your price is after a $260 rebate, so the real price is $909. So what does the extra $100 get you? Dell - 16X DVD+/-RW Drive Apple - 8x double-layer SuperDrive (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW The big negative is you have to deal with Windows, add virus and spam ware, then of course waste time running those programs on a regular basis. They have to add gobs of memory to get Vista to even run. Then of course there is all the software that Dell doesn't include that Apple does. :R Smart shoppers would get this 20" display, 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 1GB 667 DDR2 SDRAM, 250GB SATA, DVD±RW/CD-RW SuperDrive 8x, 10/100/1000, ATI 2400, AirPort Extreme, Bluetooth 2.0, iSight, wireless Keyboard & Mouse, OS X 10.5 Leopard for $1069.... But those who don't know mac are usually way off base, offer misinformation or just don't know. There is a reason Apple's market share is skyrocketing.

I've been teaching her the wonders of a 2 button mouse with scroll wheel :). All she has ever used is the mac single button mouse. If there is anyplace windows beats mac its button assigns. :)" The button assigns are the same. Just more misinformation from uninformed people. Just so you know, Apple abandoned the one button mice years ago. When I get a new Mac the first thing I do was put the one button mouse in my closet and use my 2 button mouse.

RE: What are the advantages of Apple over PC?

Hollywood uses Macs for a couple of reasons. 1. Stability. You don't want to crash and lose lots of work for that day. As WIndows becomes more stable they make more inroads in the Media arena. 2. Final Cut pro. You choice of computer will make you a better movie maker, photographer, web designer, etc... If a better software program exists on a certain platform and it's easier to use then anything it's just common sense you more apt to use it and produce better results. For example: iWeb will produce really great looking websites and it's all point and click for the user. To produce the same thing in raw html would take an expert. SO yes choosing a Mac makes you a better web designer. iPhoto will give you all the most common fixes for your pictures in and easy to understand and use slider concept. Photoshop elements can do the same but in a much more cluttered way. Even though element will do far more, most users just want to fix little things. SO yes choosing a Mac makes you a better photo processor. iMovie will produce great movies and is really easy. I know many people that started to edit their movies simply because it's easy. SO yes choosing a Mac makes you a better movie producer. The same goes for many of the apps made by Apple. They are all geared for ease of use and why windows users have been asking for iLife for windows. Now if there is a Windows only program that preforms better I'm not left out I can fire up windows on my Mac and run that program. It's easy to see the Mac is the only computer you would ever need to run Mac, windows, linux and unix apps. This is the main reason why Apple's market share has been on a steady climb and Microsoft is on a steady decline, which is about to dip below 90%. for the first time in MANY years.

RE: What are the advantages of Apple over PC?

... I prefer the Linux, and if it ran all the stuff I needed, I would probably use only the Linux...Yup me too. Maybe soon! Heck even Dell is mainstreaming Linux with their new lightweight notebook for $349. Low power processor is all that's required, not much memory needed, all free software. Tough to beat. Actually at that price and if all you need is web surfing, email and word processing/database/spreadsheet functionality, it'd be the perfect RV machine at the perfect price and delivered from a major manufacturer. On edit - I say "if all you need..." because this is really basic, no installation required, anyone can do it, stuff. A true low-priced appliance that can be expanded without many limits as the owner becomes more comfortable with it. Dave You could triple boot via Boot camp. A mac is all the computer you would ever need and run all 3 oses on the same machine. Just pick the one you're feeling at the time.

RE: What are the advantages of Apple over PC?

You guys are not making sense now. Of course you can run MAC OS 9 on a 9 year old computer that was designed for it. I can turn on my 286 and have it run Windows 3.1. I am not getting what that has to do with picture here. Try running Mac OS 9 on a modern MAC computer, or even on a newer PPC computer. You can't. The version of MAC OS that comes on your computer is the one you will have. You cannot downgrade a MAC. I tried. You can theoretically buy a new computer and downgrade it to Windows 98. Now then, I am sure Windows 98 is not going to be compatible with a quad core processor, 6 GB of RAM, SLI graphics cards, etc, etc, but I am sure if you went down to the store right now and bought a celeron single core with 512 MB of RAM, Windows 98 would work just fine. Yes, Vista will not install on a machine that does not meet its minimum system requirements. What would you have Microsoft do, make each operating system fit on 6 floppy disks so that Windows 3.1 users can upgrade to Vista. A line has to be drawn in the sand somewhere. Right over your head ,,, ZOOM !!!!!!!!!! Ummm, a G4 is a PPC... OS 9 and OS X run fine on it. See I can go back or go forward to present. Why would you want to downgrade to OS 9 , only windows users downgrade to a previous OS. Yes you can run OS 9 on an intel mac. Try Sheep saver. Try installing Vista on a 9 year old computer.. LOL, that would be fun to watch. Next time you need help with Macs give me a PM , it will save you a lot of trouble and you'll find you can usually do things you think you can't.

RE: What are the advantages of Apple over PC?

and the constant exposure to their idiotic business decisions that forces their user's to upgrade their machines or die. The malware infection was the straw that broke this camel's back. ) LOL, you have another thing coming if you think that Microsoft does this. Just wait a couple years when you cannot upgrade to a new Mac OS. You will probably run here crying. You are free to run Windows 98 or Windows Vista on the same computer, so I do not understand this point. Odd I run OS X leopard on my 9 year old G4 Tower. I added a processor upgrade (oops, PC users say you can't do that on any macs). It's still going strong and I have no plans to replace it. SO, I guess you don't Macs as much as you think you do.

RE: Dead Ipod

Ipods are notorious for not being reliable; just look how many are avialable for parts on Ebay because something broke. Both my daughters have had them, and they won't be buying new ones; both broke in one form or another after two years of use. For the money, they should last much longer. There are many other reliable brands out there that cost much less money and don't even get me started on the media file types (proprietary of course) and trying to work with Ipods and ITunes!!!!! You see more on ebay because Apple is out selling everyone one by more then 10 to 1... There is no shortage of broken Zunes, Creative , etc.. They use some of the same company and components to build them. The Myth that iPods are less reliable is just pure nonsense.

RE: Zero out all Hard Drive info before donating computer

I usually just load the factory program that came with the computer which wipes everything out I put in it. Sets it back up just I got it out of the box. DANGER WILL ROBINSON !!!!!!!!! Bad decision and you data can still be recovered. You need to do a DOD wipe, which is time consuming, to make sure you data is gone. Many programs can be found to do this. If you have a Mac it comes with the computer.
